There are a number of sub-plots within the movie like Pagalavan building a temple for Nayantara in his hometown, Sekar taking the Jaguar for a spin as the Valet parking driver, Kesavan getting muddled up in a love affair at the office and eventually being thrown out – all of them only add to the entertainment value, Doctor planning to make a movie with Pagalavan as the hero and the characters talking about scenes for the movie at serious situations really evoke laughter. The problems that they land up in and how they come out of it forms the rest of the story. They hit upon a large kidnapping plan, much against the teachings of Dass’s principles in kidnapping science. Three good-for-nothing guys with typical mannerisms come in touch with Dass and they form a team to carry out small time kidnapping that are risk free, but doesn’t allow them to lead a great life. Imagine, a CM who is having his food and he doesn’t want to be disturbed while the minister barges in, is shown to be having a takeaway pizza in the song Kasu Panam, when Arumai Pragasam sits on the chair as the king, the orderlies around him were shown blowing bubbles usage of remote controlled helicopter to take away the ransom money Aruldass who plays the role of a doctor and thug, is shown smoking before listening to someone’s illness and writes a prescription on which doctor she should consult Vijay Sethupathi is shown taking classes on what needs to be looked at while kidnapping with 5 do’s and dont’s, while the participants take down notes police inspector Brahma, played by Log Japi, for all the screen time that he has in the second half, doesn’t speak even one dialogue using gas cylinders to store and distribute money stripping people to their bare essentials before bribe is accepted from them by the ministerial staff are some of them. What I liked the most in the movie are prop comedies.
Baskar, Minister’s wife played by Radha and Chief Minister played by Radha Ravi. In addition, you had the role of minister played by M. Movie has good performances by Vijay Sethupathi (Dass), Simhaa (Pagalavan), Ashok Selvan (Kesavan), Ramesh Thilak (Sekar), Karuna Karan (Arumai Pragasam) and Aruldass (Doctor). It doesn’t make you cringe, it doesn’t use insults and physical appearances to evoke laughter.
I would put Soodhu Kavvum in the comedy genre and the type of comedy includes character comedy, improvisational comedy, observational comedy, alternative comedy, prop comedy to surreal comedy.
